NEW PRINCIPAL OF LI PO CHUN UNITED WORLD COLLEGE OF HONG KONG

It is with great pleasure that on behalf of the Board of Directors of Li Po Chun United World College of Hong Kong I am announcing the appointment of Dr Spencer A. Fowler as our Principal of the College as from 1 August 2023.

Spencer is currently the Deputy Head and Vice President for Education and Learning in Pearson College. Prior to that, he has served in many different education roles in Spain, South Africa, Egypt, Thailand, Germany, Vietnam, and Chile before taking up the headship in Yang Guang Qing International School of Beijing and later the role of Chief Executive Officer & Superintendent in the Affiliated High School of Peking University’s Dalton Academy. In this latter role, he was instrumental in establishing exchange programmes with prominent schools such as the Phillips Exeter Academy. He supported student start-ups/companies like Moon Shot Academy and other student-led experiential learning. Working actively with the United Nations, Jordanian and Chinese governments, he established Access Scholarships for refugees and marginalized youth. He will bring to Li Po Chun new ideas and deep China knowledge and is eager to confront the challenges to keep our students’ learning relevant in this digital age and will not be shy to champion for the world’s most disaffected.

As a Canadian with extensive connections and experience in China and in Asia, Spencer, his wife and his three children are extremely excited to live and work in Hong Kong. Their joining of the LPC family will no doubt add colour, diversity and vibrancy to the community. It is relevant to mention that Spencer was selected by the Search Committee after an extremely rigorous process that began in June 2022 with more than 329 prominent educators being approached, 36% of which were women and more than half from outside Europe and North America. Ultimately, more than 70 applicants applied, who were short-listed, the top candidates being interviewed twice, and the whole process culminating in a final review by all Board Members and alumni representation in a face-to-face meeting as well as informal interactions with students and teachers on campus before a final decision was made.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Principal Dr Arnett Edwards for his extensive contribution in developing Li Po Chun from strength to strength. His dedication, prudence, integrity and values-driven leadership, particularly during these few years under the threat of the Covid Pandemic as well as our 30th Anniversary is much appreciated by all and his legacy will long be remembered.
